Why this play canvas uses open order
16 October 2026 · protocol · 3 min read
The four cards on this easel are numbered. The numbers are not a score. This note is the method, written on 16 October 2026, for why NO. 1 is Mindustry and NO. 4 is Subway Surfers even though the download bands run the other way.
-
Step 1. Freeze the sequence at the moment of opening
The cards were opened in this order: Mindustry (io.anuke.mindustry), Shattered Pixel Dungeon (com.shatteredpixel.shatteredpixeldungeon), Brawl Stars (com.supercell.brawlstars), Subway Surfers (com.kiloo.subwaysurf). The rank on the homepage is that sequence. If the easel had sorted by star average, Shattered Pixel Dungeon at 4.8 would stand first and Brawl Stars at 4.2 would stand last. If it had sorted by download band, Subway Surfers at 1B+ would stand first and the two 5M+ cards would share the bottom. Neither sort was used.
A numbered list still looks like a winner’s list. The verdict table says “suited to” for that reason. The phrase is a description of the listing, not a prize.

Step 2. Refuse a blended score
Stars, review counts, and download bands measure different things and sit on different scales. 4.8 from 173K reviews and 4.2 from 26.1M reviews cannot be pushed through one formula without inventing a weight. This easel does not publish a weight. The open order avoids the formula. It also avoids the chart chip on Subway Surfers, which already says “#6 top free arcade”. That chip is Play’s. Copying it into our own numbering would mix two authorities.
Editors' Choice appears on two cards and not on the other two. It is filed on those two checks. It is not a tie-breaker for our NO. 1.

Step 3. Leave room for a second dated pass
Open order is easy to audit because the order is the order of the notes. A second pass on a later day can say “re-opened, header now different” without pretending the first rank was a scientific index. The gaps we already accept — no file size, no version, truncated data-safety lists — would make a blended score look more precise than the cards are.
The Play Canvas is not a store category. These four apps do not share a genre. Strategy, role playing, action, and the arcade chip sit side by side because they were the four cards supplied for this check, not because a crawler found they were alike.
The written checks are siblings of this note, not appendices that can contradict it. If a rank card ever says NO. 1 for a reason other than “opened first”, that card is wrong and this note is the correction. The checked date on both is 16 October 2026, so they were filed together. A reader who wants stars first can still read them; they are on every card, just not in the rank number.
What to expect when you read the homepage is a sequence you can replay: first card, second card, third card, fourth card, each with its own note, none of them declared the winner by a number we made up.
